Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can get infected and sick with norovirus. Norovirus is sometimes called the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug”. However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu, which is caused by influenza virus1. Some common symptoms of norovirus infection are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, and low-grade fever2. The symptoms usually last for 1 to 3 days and most people recover without treatment. However, some people, especially young children, older adults, and people with other medical conditions, may become dehydrated and need medical attention2. Norovirus infection can be prevented by washing your hands often, rinsing fruits and vegetables, cooking shellfish thoroughly, and avoiding contact with sick people1. Norovirus infection is more common in closed and crowded environments, such as hospitals, nursing homes, child care centers, schools, and cruise ships1. Norovirus infection is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide3.
